Ich bin ein eher schlanker Baum, der bis zu 25 Meter hoch werden kann.

Ich kann mich jedem Untergrund anpassen, sofern die Gegend ausreichend niederschlagsreich ist. Man findet mich sowohl im Flachland als auch auf ehemaligen Gletschermoränen. Ich gelte als Pionierbaumart, da ich sehr nährstoffarme Gebiete besiedeln kann.

Meine Wurzeln sind flach und bleiben an der Oberfläche, da ich die Stürme fürchte.

Meine Rinde ist weiß und glatt, außer mit zunehmendem Alter unten am Stamm.

Meine Blüten sind hängende Kätzchen.

Mein helles und leichtes Holz wird für die Schreinerei verwendet. Es ist aufgrund seiner bläulichen Flammen auch als Kaminholz sehr gefragt.

SILVER BIRCH

I am quite a slender tree that can grow to a height of 25 metres.

I can adapt to all types of terrain provided I get enough rainfall. I can be found equally well in the lowlands or on old glacier moraine. I am described as being a pioneer species because I am capable of colonising areas that are very poor in nutrients.

My roots stay close to the surface and I am sensitive to storms.

My bark is white and smooth, except at the foot when I get old.

My flowers take the form of hanging catkins.

My light coloured and lightweight wood is used in joinery. It is also appreciated for its bluish flames when burnt in fireplaces.
